Marlborough wines New Zealand are some of the most popular recent New World wines worldwide, which are produced by 176 different wineries, the Sauvignon blanc variety is specifically recognized as literally “World class”.
The Marlborough wine region is the largest region within New Zealand and produces 75% of the Countries wine production and accounts for 85% of the Countries wine exports.
The region is situated in the north-east of the South Island, the vineyards are concentrated around the Blenheim and Seddon townships. Please see the below map.
Some Background
The first vines were planted as early as 1870’s although commercial winemaking began in 1973 when Montana wines planted their large-scale vineyards when at the time Ne4w Zealand’s largest producer was Brancott Estate which is owned by Pernod Ricard.
By the early 1980’s the Marlborough region was producing some fantastic sauvignon blanc and particularly Cloudy Bay Vineyards gained International attention and acclaim for the Countries wine and even stated that they were what some consider to be producing some of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc this was written by George Taber journalist and entrepreneur within the ‘www.’ (wonderful world of wine). Other famous wine officiado’s have also made wonderful accolades about the quality of Marlborough wines and especially the Sauvignon Blanc.
