Australia has some fantastic beers most of which are readily available wherever you are worldwide, there is an expansive range of pilsner lagers to craft brew and a variety of different beers in between. One thing for certain though that we will not be mentioning Fosters throughout this article as this is clearly an export beer!

So, what are the most popular Australian beers? Let us look at some recent data from 2019 that covers the actual most popular beers within the Country based on fact.

Let us take a look at a number of these beers in more detail.

Great Northern Brewing Original

ABV: 4.2%

This top stop selling beer in 2019 is brewed using some top-quality hops, malt and yeast. The beer is clean, crisp with a subtle bitterness with a light golden color and fruity aroma. This beer is the ultimate refreshment. The brewery is owned by Carlton & United Breweries and brewed in Queensland at the CUB Yatala brewery.

Carlton Draught 

ABV: 4.7%

Also brewed at Carlton & United breweries this lager is in the top beers in the Country as is served in draught and therefore fresh, carbonated, and crisp as its poured to order in from of you in one of your favorite bars, a real treat. This beer is great value which helps in boost its popularity although based on taste and refreshing qualities it certainly meets the discerning taste of the Aussie beer drinkers

Castlemaine XXXX

ABV: 3.5%

This low ABV session beer is extremely popular in the export market but also popular in the homeland especially in Milton Queensland where it is brewed where it is referred to as “Gold”. It is a lager that is crisp and has the benefits of being low carb.

 

Victoria Bitter 

ABV: 4.9%

If you happen to mention Victoria Bitter in the presence of an Aussie, their eyes will light up and correct you by saying “VB” as its more commonly known as. This beer is full of flavor with a high level of bitterness which is perfect for those hard-core bitter drinkers. This bitter is a great tasting and real thirst-quenching beer and a real treat.

 

Tooheys Extra Dry 

ABV: 5% 

Every bottle shop throughout the Country stocks this famous beer and extremely well know and a great following worldwide. Tooheys is a lager that is quite dry with a clean crisp taste and great to refresh you a warm summer’s day.

 

 

Coopers Original Pale Ale 

ABV: 4.5%

A classic Aussie beer that not only is one of the go to beers within the Country its export popularity is also high. A thirst quenching easy to drink pale ale that is cloudy in appearance and is great value for money hence part of the reason of its success. That said don’t underestimate this beer it is a great example of Aussie brewing.

 

 

Coopers Sparkling Ale

ABV 5.8%

This is a well-balanced beer with a hoppy, malt and fruit flavors, its appearance is cloudy and a slightly sweeter taste. The ABV is higher than other beers mentioned here and less of a session ale at 5.8%.

 

 

Tooheys New 

ABV: 4.6%

This Australian lager brewed by one of the most famous brewers Tooheys is extremely popular especially in New South Wales where it appears on draught in most of the bars that you visit. The lager is smooth with a delicate hop aroma and an easy drinking beer.

 

Hahn Super Dry

ABV: 4.6%

This beer brewed in Sydney is Australia’s favorite low carb beer which is 70% lower than other beers as well as being 99% sugar free therefore one of the healthiest beers in the Country. Even though it is a healthier beer it tastes good to with its crisp dry taste.

 

 

Sandy Hook Barley Pale Ale 

ABV: 4.5%

This pale ale is brewed by Lucky Bay Brewingmade with premium barley with a color that is like that of the shorelines of Sandy Hook Island hence the name. its an easy drinking pale ale that is refreshing with a light bitterness with citrus fruit & spiciness. A well balanced and approachable beer.

Little Creatures Pale Ale

ABV: 5.2%

This craft beer brewed in Western Australia has become one of the most popular consumed beers within the Country. This beer is full of flavor with grapefruit and passionfruit notes and a well-balanced bitterness. Although slightly above average ABV this brew is additive and preservative free.

 

Cascade Draught 

ABV: 4.7 %

Cascade is the oldest brewery in the Country which has given them the time to perfect this brew which is a classic and an old time favorite, it has an earthy flavor and a slight sweetness which makes it extremely easy drinking. Beer Advocate scores the beer as 67 which is a poor rating and has some opposing reviews.

Australian Brewery All Star Session IPA

ABV: 4.2%

Top rated 5/5 on Dan Murphy’s web site this cracking session IPA is well balanced with American hops and mid-high bitterness, a real treat.
