Rum is one of those spirits that in recent years has had a resurgence in popularity , the once ‘Sailor’s drink’ tag of a drop of rum has long gone and there are some very interesting brands with great tasting products and some funky and trendy designs. So, what are the top rated rums? Before we get into that lets look at the history when rum came from.

Where does Rum come from

All rum started from sugar cane, which was introduced to Mauritius by the Dutch back in 1638. The soil on the island’s soil and climate were ideal for growing sugar cane and soon the island was producing some great yields. Rum was born later, after the Dutch first developed a drink called arrack but then after trial and error and using palm sap and coconut and later molasses, they produced a clear alcoholic liquid.

The French then arrived on the island in the early 1700’s followed by the British where they realized the benefits of sugarcane which kick started a new industry which resulted in the first commercial rum distillery being born around the 1850’s.
